SUMMARY. — The object of this paper is to compare the methods of research of Auguste Laurent (1807-1853), Marc-Antoine Gaudin (1804-1880) and Alexandre-Edouard Baudrimont (1806-1880), three French chemists belonging to the same generation. Their research focusing primarily on the ordering of atoms in the molecule was not in each case as successful. Laurent's « chemical method » differs greatly from that of his two colleagues, and this can explain the contrast between their work in point of fruitfulness.
